Kaila “Key” Gumbs
Hi! My name is Kaila Gumbs, but I also go by Key in certain circles. My pronouns are they/them, and I’m a queer black-Caribbean American artist based in South Florida. I recently earned a BFA with an emphasis in Art + Technology from the University of Florida. While very experimental in my art practice, I consider myself a storyteller, illustrator, printmaker, and filmmaker.
As a child, I was always fascinated by graphic novels, books, and films for the massive worlds and narratives created. Today, I strive to make my own diverse worlds and showcase the characters often invisible or ignored in current media. Influenced by my own life, I work to highlight themes of culture, heritage, ancestry, identity, gender, sexuality, and the nuanced intersectionality that comes with them.
